How do I know what packaging my food product needs?

Start by identifying what threatens your product's freshness. Is it moisture, oxygen, light or temperature? Those vulnerabilities determine what barrier properties you need. Match those properties to packaging format and materials that provide them.

What's the difference between moisture barrier and oxygen barrier packaging?

Moisture barrier packaging prevents water vapor from entering the package, protecting foods that lose quality when they absorb humidity, such as snacks, powders and spices. Oxygen barrier packaging prevents air from entering, protecting foods that deteriorate when exposed to oxygen, such as coffee, nuts and fats. Many foods need both.

Can I use the same packaging for different food products?

Sometimes, but not always. Basic pouches can work for multiple dry goods if they require similar barrier properties. However, nuts, coffee, candy and other foods have different packaging requirements. It is better to specify packaging matched to each product's actual requirements.

How long can packaged foods stay fresh?

Shelf life depends on the food, the barrier properties of packaging and storage conditions. Crispy snacks might stay fresh for 6-12 months in good packaging, while coffee stays fresh 6-12 weeks after roasting. Frozen foods can remain frozen indefinitely if packaging maintains integrity.

What is nitrogen flushing and when should I use it?

Nitrogen flushing replaces oxygen inside a package with inert nitrogen gas before sealing. This helps prevent oxidation in high-fat products such as nuts, granola and certain snacks. It also helps maintain product quality and can prevent crushing when vacuum sealing would damage the product.

Why do some pouches have special valves?

One-way degassing valves are used on coffee and some tea pouches. Freshly roasted coffee releases carbon dioxide for days after roasting. The valve allows CO2 to escape while preventing oxygen from entering, helping protect the coffee's flavor and package integrity.

Is resealable packaging worth the extra cost?

Yes, for most food products. Resealable zippers let customers open a package multiple times while maintaining freshness. Resealable packaging can reduce waste, improve customer satisfaction and help preserve products after opening.

What materials work best for high-fat products like nuts?

High-fat products require specialized materials that oils cannot degrade. Foil-laminated films such as PET/Aluminum/PE provide strong oxygen and light barriers while supporting proper sealing. Standard plastic films are not suitable for long-term storage of nuts or other oily products.

Do frozen food packages need the same barrier as shelf-stable packages?

No. Frozen foods do not require the same oxygen and moisture barriers as shelf-stable foods. However, frozen food packaging must remain flexible at freezer temperatures, withstand rough handling and provide moisture resistance to help prevent freezer burn.

Should I test my packaging before placing a large order?

Always. Request samples of your proposed packaging and conduct real-world testing. Store samples under conditions similar to retail and home storage and check for seal integrity, off-flavors, aroma loss and deterioration over time before committing to a large production run.
